Holiday Scams

Vendors in the Summer

Nice neighborhoods are targeted by shady door to door vendors in the summer. Magazines, paintings, other items...these are all pushed by these aggressive and sometimes dangerous vendors. Please get a description, close the door and call the police department as soon as possible. Choose Option 1 for Desk Officer. Report the vendors and have the police check their permits. Often, they will force them to move on.

A stranger at your door could be staking out your home for burglary. Be cautious and take names and car license numbers. If you are not sure of someone collecting donations for a charity, do not donate. Your check to a criminal at your door could be the start of an identify theft. Donate to a national charity using a credit card. Or go to the charity of your choice if you are set on donating money.

Neighborhood Watch Duties

Report all crimes to the Puyallup Police Department to make sure a report is filed. Report the same through the website to a board member so the web site can warn Deer Creek of wrongdoing in the area. Keep front lights on. At least the lights on the front posts and brick stands should be left on. You can save money by purchasing compact fluorescent light bulbs. Meet your neighbors and know your neighbors. Ask questions of strangers in the neighborhood. We need to watch out for our group safety. Your curiosity could be the reason why a crime does not happen in Deer Creek. Record license tag numbers of suspicious cars that are cruising or spending time by the mail boxes. Record and report license tags of cars that speed through the subdivision. We are looking for a Neighborhood Watch Coordinator to work with the City of Puyallup Neighborhood Watch program.

Scams on the Internet

E mail asking you to verify account information may be a scam. Avoid giving any information on the Internet. If you have to, then make sure you have a secure connection when you enter sensitive information. It should say so on the screen and this should be only for companies that you sought out. If you are responding to an incoming e mail from an unknown company and you are still interested in talking with them, do not enter the information. Call the 800 number instead and still be very, very skeptical.
